2014 U.S. Olympic Bobsled Team replacement athletes announced

KOENIGSSEE, Germany (Jan. 22, 2014)- The U.S. Bobsled & Skeleton Federation (USBSF) today announced the two women’s and two men’s athletes who will serve as replacement athletes for the 2014 U.S. Olympic Bobsled Team. Katie Eberling (Palos Hills, Ill.), Kristi Koplin (Cedar City, Utah), Chris Langton (Melrose, Mass.) and Andreas Drbal (Belmont, Calif.) will travel with the team to Sochi, Russia.

Replacement athletes can substitute for competing athletes during training runs, and they are eligible to compete in the event of an injury or illness. These four athletes will travel and train with the team leading up to and during the Olympic Winter Games. If a replacement is needed, the selection committee will reevaluate the teams before making a nomination.

Emily Azevedo (Chico, Calif.), Maureen Ajoku (San Jose, Calif.), Adam Clark (Owenton, Ky.) and Chuck Berkeley (Walnut Creek, Calif.) will not travel with the team to Sochi, but they are still in the pool of athletes to be considered should a replacement become necessary.

Eberling, a former Western Michigan University volleyball player, is the 2011 U.S. National Push champion and two-time bobsled World Championship medalist. Koplin, who has an impressive collegiate track and field background, began the sport in 2010.  She is a 1st Lt. and a member of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program.

Langton, the younger brother of world champion bobsledder Steve Langton, played lacrosse for Cornell University before following in his brother’s footsteps. Just weeks into his career, Langton was selected for the 2012-2013 national team. Drbal, a web designer off the ice, also made his first national team during his rookie season in 2012-2013, and he threw javelin for four years while attending UCLA.
