International racing begins with North American Cup in Calgary

CALGARY, Alberta (Nov. 12, 2013)- The 2013-2014 international competitive season kicks off on Thursday with the start of the North American Cup series in Calgary, Alberta. The U.S. will field a full roster of eight skeleton athletes and eight bobsled teams in a series of races on the 1988 Olympic track. 

Veronica Day (Vienna, Va.), Gracie Clapp (Jacksonville, Fla.), Megan Henry (Roxbury, Conn.) and Kellie Delka (Denton, Texas) will race in the women’s skeleton division.  Men’s skeleton competitors include Greg West (Orange Beach, Ala.), Austin McCrary (Colleyville, Texas), Trent Kraychir (Desert Hot Springs, Calif.) and Mike Rogals (Orwell, Vt.). 

National team bobsled pilots Nick Cunningham (Monterey, Calif.) and Cory Butner (Yucaipa, Calif.) will prepare for the upcoming start of the World Cup tour in Calgary by racing in the North American Cup competitions.  Reigning North American Cup champion Codie Bascue (Whitehall, N.Y.) is expected to once again battle fellow U.S. driver Jake Peterson (Princeton, Minn.) for the title. 

North American Cup champion and Olympian Bree Schaaf (Bremerton, Wash.) heads up the women’s bobsled pilot roster. Up-and-coming drivers Brittany Reinbolt (Searcy, Ark.), Nicole Vogt (Dallas, Texas) and Berit Tomten (Salt Lake City, Utah) will join Schaaf in the race for the podium.

Thursday, Nov. 14:

  • 9 am: Women’s and men’s skeleton race #1
  • 3 pm: Women’s and men’s two-man bobsled race #1

Friday, Nov. 15:

  • 9 am: Women’s and men’s skeleton race #2
  • 3 pm: Women’s and men’s two-man bobsled race #2

Saturday, Nov. 16:

  • 10 am: Men’s four-man bobsled race #1

Sunday, Nov. 17:

  • 3 pm: Men’s four-man bobsled race #1

Several national team athletes wrap up international training week on the 2014 Olympic track in Sochi, Russia next Tuesday before flying to Calgary for the start of the World Cup tour.  Official training for the World Cup begins on Nov. 26.
