LAKE PLACID, N.Y.-U.S. Bobsled Push Championships will be held on Tuesday, September 2 and Wednesday, September 3, with 27 men and 13 women competing for their respective titles. The competition will take place at Canada's National Sliding Center, the Ice House, which is an indoor push-start training center in Calgary, Alberta.
Competing in the U.S. Push Championships is the first step towards the selection process for the 2008-2009 World Cup team.
"A competition like this helps to create the next generation of elite athletes," said Darrin Steele, US Bobsled & Skeleton Federation CEO and two-time bobsled Olympian. "It gives them a chance to compete head-to-head with the best push athletes in the country, and it also gives the coaching staff an opportunity to see how these athletes stack up against each other."
Athletes were invited to compete based on a combination of last season's results, test scores, or recommendations by the coaching staff. Talent ranges from bobsled Olympic medalists like Shauna Rohbock, Valerie Fleming, Todd Hays, Mike Kohn, Randy Jones and Bill Schuffenhauer to rookie athletes giving their first push towards a new Olympic dream.
The push competition schedule is as follows, with times listed in MST:
Tuesday, September 2: Men's Single Push at 11 am
Wednesday, September 3: Women's Single Push, Men's & Women's Pilot Push at 9 am
Media interested in attending the event should contact Amanda Bird, Marketing & Communications Manager for the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, at (518) 523-1842, ext. 106, or at email@example.com.
