USAB Makes Safe Sport Training Mandatory Effective April 15, 2014

USA Badminton (USAB) is partnering with the U.S. Olympic Committee to bring the Safe Sport initiative to the USAB membership as athlete safety concerns our entire membership. Safe Sport is a well-developed athlete protection program that has been instituted by the USOC and many other National Governing Bodies of sport to help protect our athletes.

What is Safe Sport Training?
Safe Sport is a mandatory program for all USOC National Governing Bodies. The emphasis of Safe Sport is to ensure athlete safety against many kinds of abuse, including harassment, bullying and improper touching. USAB is requiring Safe Sport Training to be mandatory beginning April 15 2014 and training to be completed by June 1, 2014.

Who should complete Safe Sport Training?
USAB members involved in supervisory positions involving USAB athletes that requires close contact at all USAB and BWF sanctioned or sponsored domestic and international events must complete the Safe Sport Training by the June 1, 2014. This involves USAB Team Officials , USAB Certified Coaches, USAB Technical Officials, Parent Coaches, Junior Coaches and Personal Coaches (volunteers and uncertified coaches in individual programs and clubs).

Why Safe Sport Training?
Athletes will perform better and get more from sport if they feel safe. The Safe Sport program seeks to create a healthy, supportive environment for all participants. Through education, resources, and training, the Safe Sport Program is designed to help members of the sport community recognize, respond, and to reduce misconduct in sport.

What other requirement do I need to satisfy in addition to Safe Sport?
USAB Team Officials , USAB Certified Coaches, USAB Technical Officials,  and Personal Coaches are required to complete Safe Sport training and have a background check. 

How does one complete Safe Sport Training?
You can access and complete Safe Sport Training at, and follow the directions given. Register for the program with your USAB  Member Number by clicking on the yellow “Register” button at the top right of the page (“this training is free of charge!”).

How long is the certificate valid?
As of right now the certificate is “good for TWO years.” If this changes USAB will notify everyone by publishing the information on the USAB website, Facebook, Twitter and email USAB members.

How do I maintain Safe Sport Training records?
Once you complete the training you will be given an “electronic CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION.” Save the certificate and E-mail it to the USAB Safe Sport Training Directory ( Next, go to your USAB profile and access the “credential page.” Scroll to the bottom of the page to the “Continuing Education Page.” Select Safe Sport and record the date of training.
