Players Win Two Gold and Two Bronze at the XXVIII Brazil International in Sao Paulo, Brazil
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Phillip Chew (Orange, Calif.), Jamie Subandhi (Westminster, Calif.), and Sattawat Pongnairat (Orange, Calif.) notched impressive performances in São Paulo, Brazil at the XXVIII Brazil International held October 2-6, 2013. The team of Chew and Subandhi won the gold medal in the mixed doubles event while Chew and Pongnairat proved their dominance in the men’s doubles bracket, also winning gold. In mixed doubles, Chew and Subandhi earned the top spot on the podium after defeating the hybrid pair of Yang Chuh Hsun of Chinese Taipei and Michelle Li of Canada, 21-13, 21-19. Subandhi took bronze in the women's singles event, as she battled Brazil’s Lohaynny Vicente and fell in three games, 21-11, 18-21, 21-16.
Chew also teamed with Pongnairat to win gold in the men's doubles event. After facing many Brazilian teams, they advanced to the gold medal match and defeated yet another Brazilian pair: Hugo Arthuso and Alex Yuwan Tjong in three games, 12-21, 21-13, 21-15. Pongnairat earned the bronze medal in men's singles after hastily defeating Nicholas Bonkowsky of Trinidad & Tobago as well as Giovanni Greco of Italy. He eventually fell to Cuba’s Osleni Guerrero in the semi-finals, 21-16, 14-21, 21-10.
