Team USA Wins Bronze at the 2013 Pan Am Junior Team Championships

COLO. SPRINGS, Co -- Team USA took third place in the Pan Am Junior Team Championships which concluded yesterday in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico. Team USA faced Brazil in the semi-finals where they lost their first two games in women’s singles and men’s singles.  Anna Tang was defeated by Lohaynny Carolyne Vicente 16-21, 14-21 and Alan Shekhtman battled Ygor Coelho Oliveira for 35 minutes before falling 10-21, 17-21.  USA came back to tie the standings with Brazil, winning men’s doubles and women’s doubles in the next two games of the day. Doubles pair Cherie Chow and Christine Yang quickly crushed the Brazilians Mariana Pedrol Freitas and Thais Gomes to win 21-8, 21-8. In his second game of the day, Alan Shakhtman paired with Aston Khor to defeat Francielton Farias and Fabio Soares 21-13, 21-17 and evened the team score against Brazil 2-2. The final and deciding competition of the semifinals elevated to three games as the American mixed doubles team of Kenneth Hui and Cherie Chow battled Ygor Coelho Oliveira and Lohaynny Carolyne Vicente of Brazil. After 45 minutes, the Brazil pair persevered and won its team a spot in the finals winning 21-16, 8-21, 15-21. Team USA then faced Mexico in the fight for third place.

In the first game against Mexico, American men’s singles player William Cheung fell to Luis Ramon Garrido Esquivel 16-21, 16-21. In the women’s singles division, Anna Tang competed brilliantly against Sabrina Solis Martinez to steal the victory in a third game, winning 21-12, 18-21, 21-17. In the men’s doubles event, American pair Aston Khor and Alan Shekhtman proved their domination against Daniel Martinez Gamiño and Gerson Quezada Fuentes with a performance of 21-5, 21-11. With one win needed to clinch the bronze medal in the team event, the Americans Cherie Chow and Christine Yang battled Haramara Gaitan Fausto and Nydia Yeli Gonzalez Saavedra of Mexico and finished the day with an exciting win 21-12, 21-14.
