USA Badminton Crowns Winners of the 2013 Yonex/OCBC US Open
COLO. SPRINGS, Co. -- Japan, Thailand, and China dominated the podium on Saturday at the 2103 Yonex/OCBC US Open Grand Prix Gold Championships in Orange, California, winning a combined 11 of 15 medals. All three countries arrived at Orange County Badminton Club last week with top seeded players and extensive rosters of 15 or more.
American players competed intensely with several advancing into the second and third rounds. The team of Eva Lee and Paula Obanana , along with sisters Annie Xu and Kerry Xu swiftly moved into the quarterfinals of the women’s doubles event before falling to Chinese and Japanese teams, respectively. American men’s singles favorite Sattawat Pongnairat advanced to the quarterfinals but fell to the eventual gold medalist, Tien Minh Nguyen of Vietnam, 21-10, 21-10. Veteran players Eva Lee and Tony Gunawan flew through the mixed doubles competition before battling against the tournament’s number one seeded pairing, Chun Hei Lee and Hoi Wah Chau of Hong Kong. In a match lasting 25 minutes, the Hong Kong pair won 21-18, 21-12 and went on to win the gold medal in mixed doubles.
