2013 US Open Championships Begin at Orange County Badminton Club
This week, Orange County Badminton club is hosting the 2013 Yonex/OCBC US Open Championships in Orange, California. Nearly 250 players from around the world have gathered here to compete in the tournament that began July 8th and will conclude late Saturday night July 13th and features a $120,000 prize purse.
Last year, the 2012 US Open acted as a final preparation event for the 2012 London Olympic Games and provided a great opportunity for Howard Bach, Tony Gunawan, and Iris Wang, along with international Olympians to fine tune their skills before London. There is a different crowd of players in 2013, but just as much excitement as over 30 countries are being represented and Olympic hopefuls for 2016 start their trek up the world ranking ladder.
On July 9th and 10th, limited live streaming will be broadcasted from OCBC and found at http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Badminton/Watch-Live. The streaming is brought to you by coachesaid.com with live commentary and scoring throughout the day.
The first day of competition began with qualifying rounds, and at 5:00pm the men’s singles main draw launched into play with many Americans facing tough opponents. One of these Americans is Calvin Lin, a 23 year old from Villa Park, California, who took Trinidad & Tobago’s Nicholas Bonkowsky to three games and earned the win 19-21 21-12 21-17.
Orange County Badminton Club will be busy this week as badminton players from across the globe battle for the podium at the 2013 Yonex/OCBC US Open.
