On the Road with Coach Ng
The World University Games are quickly approaching! They will be held in Kazan, Russia from July 6th through the 17th and this is the first time that badminton will be featured in competition. Led by Head Coach Ray Ng, Team USA will spend the next few weeks traveling and competing against notable opponents from around the world.
Ray Ng became involved with badminton when his son and daughter started playing in the mid-2000s. At first he was just a “badminton dad” and didn’t participate much but as his daughter progressed he realized how much he enjoyed the sport especially as he coached his children and other players. A few notable experiences with badminton were as a coach at the 2010 World Junior Badminton Championships as well as at the 2009 & 2010 Junior Pan American Championships.
Even though this is the first time badminton competition will be included at the World University Games, this is not the first time Coach Ng has participated. He was a player on the Hong Kong Basketball team in 1979. Recently he has been thrilled for the chance to go back representing both badminton and Team USA. When asked what he hopes to accomplish he said “It would be great to medal but it would be difficult. I want the athletes to perform the best they can.” Coach Ray Ng is eager for the opportunity and experience the four young athletes will encounter, as well as the culture of the location and other athletes.
