2013 Dave Freeman Open Reaches 56 Years of Play

Feb. 07, 2013, 3:53 p.m. (ET)

The 2013 Dave Freeman Open will be held at San Diego Badminton Club from February 22nd-24th and registration is now open for everyone.

The namesake of the tournament, Dave Freeman, is regarded by many to be the greatest badminton player of all time. Freeman died on June 28, 2001 after battling Merkle cell carcinoma. Freeman never a lost a singles match from 1939 until his retirement in 1953. He is the only American to ever win the All-England title and also won six straight US singles titles. He also was able to win the doubles title five times. Freeman was inducted into the US Badminton Hall of Fame in 1956 and was the first to be enshrined into the International Badminton Federation Hall of Fame in 1997. Not only was Freeman a dominant badminton player, but he also excelled in tennis, table tennis, and squash.

The Dave Freeman Open is being held for the 56th time and has continued to see great success. In 2012, 117 players came out to participate for the two-star event, but in 2013 the Dave Freeman Open is going bigger. This year’s tournament will be a five-star event with $16,000 in prize money and participation numbers are expected to increase. Typically participants from the ages of 15-70 come out, giving every badminton fan a true tournament experience.

The event holds matches for A, B, C, and D levels, as well as having a combined senior section. This allows people being of at least age 35, to pair up with another player to play in a doubles match where their combined ages are used to determine opponents. These ranges go from 80+ all the way up to 130+. This format has been in effect for many years and continues to attract great participation. Last year, there were a total of 247 matches and these numbers will most likely increase with the event becoming more prestigious this year. Players of all levels will be watching some of the best badminton around.

The main sponsors of this event will be Li-Ning, Kason, Badmintonian, and Digi Sports. Li-Ning and Kason are contributing the prizes for the A group winners. Badmintonian will be distributing prizes to the B group winners, and Digi Sports will hand out the prizes for the C group winners. The Dave Freeman Open has been home to some of the most exciting matchplay in recent memory. Players mainly come from the California region as well as surrounding states, but is open to anyone who is a member of USA Badminton. Membership applications will be available at the front door, and anyone who is a member of the San Diego Badminton Club will have their membership fee paid for by the club if they choose to participate.
