Team Report from XX Pan American Junior Badminton Championship

By:  Kowi Chandra

Congratulations to USA for a stellar competition in The 20th Pan American Junior Championships 2011

With approximately 500 players from 16 countries in the Caribbean and the regions of North, South and Central America, the 20th Pan American Junior Badminton Championships, July 27 – 31, in Kingston, Jamaica, has successfully concluded.

This year, Team USA returned with stronger players, representing every single age category. It was surely a very exciting, roller coaster week, with some bitter losses, some closely contested calls, some heart-attack games, and some super sweet victories. The only things that were constant throughout the week was the undying support of the coaching staffs and the spirit of the team -- the cheering, yelling, and clapping during the final matches from USA could literally be heard outside the building of the National Indoor Sports Centre of Kingston.

Whether our young athletes won or lost, U.S. team overall did very well. We have players within top 4 ranks in most of the age category from U11 all the way to U19. The team has brought home total 35 medals including 12 Gold Medals -- most Gold Medals among all other countries.

Big thanks to the Coaching Staffs: Andy Chong, Ajit Umrani, Johannah Lee, Kowi Chandra, Paz Ben-Sira, and Zhou Lei, for their commitment and dedication in coaching all these Junior Athletes.  Also, special thank to Mr. Ho-Yen Chang, Team Manager, for his countless effort in coordinating the team logistic.
