U.S. Athletes Win 35 Individual Medals and Place Fourth in Team Competition at XX Pan American Junior Badminton Championships

USA Badminton Athletes Bring Home 12 Gold Medals from Kingston, Jamaica

 

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Badminton was well represented at the XX Pan American Junior Badminton Championships, July 24-31, in Kingston, Jamaica with U.S. athletes winning 35 individual medals (12 of them gold) and placing fourth in the team competition.  The event was held at the National Indoor Sports Center in Kingston.

 

Team competition was held the first three days of the event.  Each team was comprised of four girls and four boys for the team competition.  Representing the United States for the team competition on the girl’s side were Christine Chen, Claudia Hardi, Samantha Li and Danae LongMichael Buasan, Brandon Chi, Jeffrey Kuo and Randy Ma completed the boy’s team for the United States.

Team USA faced a very tough Brazil team in the semifinal match.  Brazil had earned their way to the semifinals by beating Peru 3-1, a perennial powerhouse and the second seed.  After five very close matches, Team USA lost 3-2.

 

Both teams were evenly matched as seen by the close scores of each match.  Long and Kuo won their mixed doubles match over Victor Moretti and Luane Vicente 21-23, 21-6, 21-17. Kuo then teamed with Chi to win boy’s doubles over Lucas Pinto and Leanardo Alkim.

 

Team USA played Guatemala for 3rd place.  Again, both teams were evenly matched with Team USA losing 3-2.  Long and Kuo won their mixed doubles match over Jonathan Solis and Natalia Flores 1-21, 21-14, 21-16.  Li and Hardi won their girl’s doubles match over Natalia Flores and Nikte Sotomayor 21-6, 21-16.

Individual competition was contested in 25 different divisions for girls and boys.  The individual disciplines of singles, doubles and mixed doubles were contested for the various age divisions; under-11, under-13, under-15, under-17 and under-19.

 

In individual competition USA Badminton athletes captured a total of 35 medals, including 12 gold medals.
