USA Badminton Athletes Win Gold at the Miami Pan Am Invitational
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Fresh off their gold medal performance in men’s doubles at the Pan American Badminton Championships in Curitiba, Brazil, Vincent Nguy (Olney, Md.) and Sameera Gunatileka (Silver Spring, Md.) proved golden again by winning the gold medal in men’s doubles at the XII Bill Graham Miami Pan Am Invitational badminton tournament in Miami Lakes, Fla. Their fellow USA Badminton teammates Priscilla Lun (San Marino, Calif.) and Hock Lai Lee (San Marino, Calif.) took home the gold in the mixed doubles competition.
Nguy and Gunatileka defeated Virgil Soeroredjo and Mitchel Wongsodikromo of Surinam two games to none (21-11 and 21-12) in the finals of the men’s doubles to win the gold medal. Lun and Lee defeated Bjorn Seguin (New Zealand) and Deyanira Angulo (Mexico) two games to none (21-13 and 21-18) in the final of the mixed doubles division.
Lee also captured the silver medal in men’s singles only falling in the final to Kevin Cordon of Guatemala two games to one (21-13, 14-21 and 18-21). In women’s singles Italy’s Agnese Allegrini defeated Germany’s Nicole Grether two games to none (21-16 and 21-17). The women’s doubles title went to Grether and Charmaine Reid (Canada). They defeated Mexico’s Cynthia Gonzalez and Victoria Montero two games to none (21-11 and 21-12).
