USA Badminton Team Concludes Competition at 2010 Uber Cup

May 14, 2010, 5:54 p.m. (ET)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The young USA Badminton Team has wrapped up competition in the 2010 Uber Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  The Uber Cup, held bi-annually, is considered the Women’s Team World Badminton Championship and is one of the most sought after trophies in women’s competitive badminton.

Leading the USA Badminton Team were 2008 Olympians Eva Lee (Orange, Calif.) and Mesinee “May” Mangkalakiri (Garden Grove, Calif.).  The two veterans were joined by young up-and-comers Kuei-Ya “Joanne” Chen (Irvine, Calif.), Priscilla Lun (San Marino, Calif., USA), Rena Wang (Arcadia, Calif.), Iris Wang (Arcadia, Calif.) and Cee Ketpura (Orange, Calif.).

The U.S. women had a tough draw facing badminton giant China right out of the gate.  For the Uber Cup each country plays as part of a three country pool.  The U.S. was matched with the badminton powerhouses of China and Malaysia.  Each country plays the other in five matches, three singles and two doubles.  U.S. results against China and Malaysia were as follows:

China def. USA 5-0

Yihan Wang (China) def. Rena Wang (Arcadia, Calif., USA) 21-2; 21-9

Xin Wang (China) def. Iris Wang (Arcadia, Calif., USA) 21-8; 21-7

Shixian Wang (China) def. Cee Ketpura (Orange, Calif.). 21-7; 21-5

Jin Ma and Xiaoli Wang (China) def. Eva Lee (Orange, Calif., USA) and Mesinee “May” Mangkalakiri (Garden Grove, Calif., USA) 21-7; 21-12

Qing Tian and Pan Pan (China) def. Kuei-Ya “Joanne” Chen (Irvine, Calif., USA) and Priscilla Lun (San Marino, Calif., USA) 21-5; 21-5

Malaysia def. USA 5-0

Wong Mew Choo (Malaysia) def. Rena Wang (Arcadia, Calif., USA) 21-7; 21-10

Tee Jing Yi (Malaysia) def. Eva Lee (Orange, Calif., USA) 21-12; 21-14

Sonia Cheah (Malaysia) def. Cee Ketpura (Orange, Calif.). 21-16; 16-21; 21-9

Woon Khee Wei and Ng Hui Ling (Malaysia) def. Eva Lee (Orange, Calif., USA) and Mesinee “May” Mangkalakiri (Garden Grove, Calif., USA) 21-17; 22-24; 21-14

Wong Pei Tty and Eei Hui Chin (Malaysia) def. Kuei-Ya “Joanne” Chen (Irvine, Calif., USA) and Priscilla Lun (San Marino, Calif., USA) 21-9; 21-8

Despite disappointing results in the win/loss column, the USA women’s badminton team did gain important international experience, especially for the younger players like Ketpura who will be representing the United States at the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore this August.
