COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A total of 287 junior badminton athletes displayed their talent at the 2009 USA Badminton Junior National Championships, held July 20-25 at the Orange County Badminton Club in Orange, Calif. This was the most entries ever for this annual USA Badminton event.
The Junior National Championships is a key event in the athlete development pipeline for USA Badminton. This year, 61 of the participants in the U.S. event have registered to compete in the 2009 Pan American Junior Badminton Championships, which will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, August 17-23. This marks the largest ever USA junior entry for an international event held outside the continental United States.

Some names to keep an eye on came from the Under-17 and Under-19 divisions. In Under-17, Phillip Chew (Orange, Calif.) captured the triple-crown, winning gold in mixed doubles, boys singles and boys doubles. Cee Ketpura (Orange, Calif.) also had a hat trick, winning gold in mixed doubles (with Chew), girls singles and girls doubles.
In the Under-19 divisions, Marvin Lin (Villa Park, Calif.) won gold in mixed doubles and boys doubles; as well as silver in Under-22 boys doubles. Thuy Hoang (Garden Grove, Calif.) won -gold in Under-19 girls singles, silver in girls doubles; as well as silver in Under-22 girls doubles. Isabel Zhong (Gardena, Calif.) won gold in girls doubles and silver in girls singles. Terrence Pang (Cupertino, Calif.) also competed in several events, winning silver in boys singles and finishing fourth in mixed doubles and boys doubles.
