The California spring weather was the perfect setting for the 2009 U.S. Senior National Championships at the historic Manhattan Beach Badminton Club March 25-29.  One hundred thirty bird bashers hit the club's five courts for five days to determine winners in fifty-five events.  It was great to see former national champions John and Traci Britton, Gary Higgins, Tariq Wadood, and Joy Kitzmiller among the seniors vying for medals.  Also among the players was Ann Marie Donohue, the badminton player many of you have seen on the recent Aleve TV commercial.

A luau was scheduled for Saturday evening on the pool deck at the MBBC. A  delicious buffet was followed by a special hula duo treating the crowd to hula dances from Tahiti to Bora-Bora to Hawaii.  Volunteers Dick Witte and Tom Carmichael along with other players joined them for a few lessons and a little dancing themselves.

USA Badminton CEO/Secretary General Dan Cloppas reported on the status of the new Board of Directors and USOC endeavors with the 2016 Chicago Olympics bid.  The Ada & Charles Wurst Sportsmanship Award was presented to Duane Enochs, and the Ray Scott Award went to Bob Cook.
