USA Badminton Team Wins Three Bronze Medals at the 2008 Pan American Badminton Championships in Lima, PeruDespite not having the top U.S. athletes that competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, the USA Badminton Team that competed at the 2008 Pan American Championships in Lima, Peru, October 1-5, won three bronze medals. Shannon Pohl won bronze in women's singles, Rulien Yeh and Rulan Yeh won bronze in women's doubles and the U.S. won the bronze in the team event.
USA Badminton was represented in women's singles, men's singles, women's doubles, men's doubles, mixed doubles and the team event at the event.
In women's singles, Pohl posted the top individual finish for the U.S., winning the bronze medal. Her loss came in the semifinal to eventual silver medalist Christina Aicardi of Peru two games to none (10-21, 12-21). In this event there was no semifinal match as the loser of both semifinals were awarded bronze medals. Peru's Claudia Rivero won the gold medal in women's singles. Lili Zhou and Ruth Menchaca both won their opening round match before being eliminated in the second round. Zhou lost to the eventual gold medalist Rivero. Rena Wang fell in opening round to the eventual silver medalist.
In women's doubles, the Yeh twin sisters also won the bronze medal. The Yeh's lost in the semifinals to Peru's Aicardi and Rivero, the gold and silver medalist from women's singles, two games to none (17-21, 13-21). Aircardi and Rivero went on to win the gold medal in women's doubles. Also in women's doubles, the U.S. team of Pohl and Menchaca won their first round match, but lost in the second round.
In men's singles, the U.S. athletes, Ted Shear, Dean Schoppe, Sameera Gunatileka and Mathew Fogarty were all eliminated in the opening round.
In men's doubles, the U.S. team of Vincent Nguy and Gunatileka won their opening round match against Brazil before losing to Guatemala in the quarterfinals. The team of Fogarty and Schoppe had a bye through the first round, but lost in the second round to Peru.
The U.S. had three teams compete in mixed doubles. Gunatileka and Rulien Yeh defeated Ecuador and Peru respectively in the first two rounds to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals they fell to Canada's Toby Ng and Valerie Loker who went on to win the silver medal. The final U.S. team of Nguy and Rulan Yeh defeated Guatemala in the opening round before losing, also to Canada's Ng and Loker, in the second round.
In the team event USA Badminton was represented by Zhou, Rulien Yeh, Rulan Yeh, Wang, Fogarty, Schoppe and Shear. The U.S. defeated Brazil 3-2 and Ecuador 5-0 to win the Group B pairings. The team then met Canada in the semifinal, but fell 1-3. They rebounded in the bronze medal match defeating Mexico by the score of 3-1.
Overall the U.S. captured three bronze medals from the 2008 Pan American Badminton Championships. The team was coached by Andy Chong and Ray Wang served as the Team Leader.
