China's Zhang wins badminton gold

BEIJING (AP) Defending champion Zhang Ning of China has won the Olympic gold medal in badminton women's singles, defeating top-seeded compatriot Xie Xingfang in three sets.

Second-seeded Zhang beat Xie 21-12, 10-21, 21-18 Saturday to defend the title she won in Athens. This was China's second badminton gold medal at these Olympics.

Zhang dropped to her knees and thrust both arms in the air when she won the match with a drop shot that Xie netted.

Indonesia's Maria Kristin Yulianti has won the bronze medal, defeating China's Lu Lan 11-21, 21-13, 21-15.
