Howard Bach and Bob Malaythong Will Carry the Remaining Hopes for the USA Badminton Team at the 2008 Olympic Games Tomorrow as they Begin Men's Doubles Action
BEIJING, China - Howard Bach (San Francisco, Calif./Orange, Calif.) and Khan "Bob" Malaythong (Rockville, Md./Orange, Calif.), the lone USA Badminton athletes remaining in the 2008 Olympic Games Badminton tournament will finally get into action Tuesday, August 12 at 10:55 at the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium. Bach and Malaythong will take on brothers Chris Dednam and Roelof Dednam of the Republic of South Africa in their first match of the 2008 OIympic Games.
Coming into the 2008 Olympic Games, Bach and Malaythong were considered the top prospect for the U.S. for advancing into the latter rounds of the tournament. Bach is the only returning Olympian for the U.S. At the 2004 Olympic Game in Athens, Greece, Bach and his partner Kevin Han advanced through the first round of the men's doubles competition when they beat a team from South Africa. Bach and Malaythong enter tomorrow's match with the confidence of recently winning the men's doubles title at the 2008 U.S. Open Badminton Championships at the Orange County Badminton Club in Orange, Calif. Bach also enters these Olympic Games as a World Champion having won the men's doubles World Championships in 2005 with Tony Gunawan, a feat never before accomplished by an American badminton athlete.
In men's singles action today Raju Rai (Atlanta, Ga./Anaheim, Calif.) suffered a two games to none loss to Finland's Ville Lang (9-21; 16-21).
Eva Lee (Orange, Calif.) and Mesinee "May" Mangkalakiri (Garden Grove, Calif.) fell in the opening round of women's doubles on Sunday, August 10 to Yanmei Jiang and Yujia Li of Senegal two games to none (12-21, 12-21).
Lee also bowed out early in women's singles on Saturday, August 9, the opening day of the badminton competition, losing to Canada's Anna Rice two games to one (15-21, 21-19, 19-21). A small victory for Lee though was the fact that she became the first U.S. women to win a game in singles competition at the Olympic Games.
