On August 30, Archery begins at the Paralympic Games in London!

The Events: There are several different styles of equipment, and types of events, that comprise the world of competitive archery. However, in the Paralympic Games, there are individual and team events, both shot at a 122 centimeter target, at a distance of 70 meters. Put simply, shooting the "x" at the very center of the target would be like shooting a silver dollar from a distance of two-thirds the length of a football field!
This event will be competed at London's historic Royal Artillery Barracks, in the Woolwich area of London.
Team USA has athletes competing in the men's open compound, men's W1/W2 recurve, women's standing recurve, men's standing recurve and men's W1 compound classifications. Team USA archers will compete in a ranking round on August 30, followed by individual elimination rounds.
First up for archers will be a ranking round, in which each archer shoots 72 arrows at 70 meters. Archers will be ranked by their scores, and then athletes will be placed into individual and team brackets for Olympic Round match play. For USA athletes, they will be placed into individual brackets only.
Individual match play begins on September 1 with 1/16 and 1/8 eliminations for men and women. Click here for full competition schedule.
In individual competition, the first archer is seeded against the last-ranked archer, number two versus second to last, and so forth. Brackets continue from thirty two archers to, sixteen, eight, and four. In the semifinals, the winners of each match are pitted against one another for the gold medal contest, while the two remaining archers shoot for bronze.
Both the team and individual events promise significant excitement, given the caliber of athletes participating, advances in technology, and the subtle nuances of how the game is played.
