Wondering how to get started in Junior Olympic Archery Development? Inspired by movies like "The Hunger Games" and want to try archery?
Click here to view our club listing.
You can contact the club by phone or email the leader about joining their club.
If there are no clubs near you, consider starting a new JOAD Club with a group of adult leaders and an instructor or coach. Contact your
JOAD State Coordinator
for further assistance. They generally know what resources are in your area, so email them directly with your questions, or contact the
National JOAD Coordinator.
Many clubs have loaner equipment you can use as you get started in the sport. As you progress through learning the proper technique, you can get advice from the club coach on purchasing your own equipment. The style of equipment you buy, recurve or compound, may depend on the style of shooting you want to pursue.
Dedication and discipline can take a JOAD youth far in the sport of archery. The steps to success are different for each archer. Our experience has been:
First, learn the basics with JOAD Club bows.
Second, establish a re
l
ationship with a "bow technician" that can advise you on equipment and help you set up the bow. Many times this person will be the JOAD Leader or Coach.
Third, seek advanced training or coaching. USA Archery has great, dedicated archery coaches and staff.
Fourth, compete at tournaments. The JOAD community is wonderful and they are there to help whenever is necessary. Beginners routinely start their tournament experience at the club level and then move into State, National and International competitions, respectively.
Practice each step of the way....and never be afraid to ask questions!
