Instructor and Coach Certification Programs

Archery Instructors and Coaches are the foundation of USA Archery's programs, camps and the athlete development pipeline. Obtaining a certification not only provides you with valuable knowledge and hands-on skills, but also boosts the marketing value of your program. USA Archery, the National Field Archery Association and the Archery Shooters Association jointly recognize all certification levels.


USA Archery Level 1 Instructor Certification

The Level 1 Archery Instructor Certification Course provides graduates the necessary tools to maintain a high level of safety both on and off the archery range and ensures that minimum standards for archery instruction are consistently taught to provide for the safety and enjoyment of the participants, instructors and spectators. Level 1 Instructors are well prepared to teach beginner archery programs to people of all ages and abilities in a variety of both indoor and outdoor settings in the disciplines of target, field or 3-D archery. The Level 1 Instructor will learn about range safety, range setup, the steps of shooting, equipment and repair, programs and lesson plans.

Prerequisites: Minimum age is 15*

Benefits:

All Level 1 Instructors who assist in a USA Archery Club are required to obtain a Range Pass.

* Level 1 course is not a prerequisite to attend the Level 2 course.

USA Archery Level 2 Instructor Certification

The Level 2 Archery Instructor Certification Course includes the Level 1 Archery Instructor Certification Course and provides students with an introduction to the National Training System (NTS) Steps of Shooting for recurve and compound, equipment and accessory setup, athlete developement and events as well as qualifies students to teach the Level 1 Archery Instructor Certification Course. Graduates of the Level 2 Archery Instructor Certification Course are well prepared to serve as the lead instructor for long-term archery programs such as Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD), Adult Archery Program and Collegiate Archery Program clubs, as well as the Explore Archery Program.

Course Length: 12-16 hours (Dependent on class size)

Certification Period: Three years from the date of course completion

  • Minimum age is 18
  • Membership to USA Archery*, National Field Archery Association (NFAA) or Archery Shooters Association (ASA)

USA Archery Level 2 Instructor Trainer Certification

The Level 2 Instructor Trainer certification is an additional certification current USA Archery Level 2 instructor’s and higher-level coaches may apply for if they would like to be eligible to teach the Level 2 Instructor course. The goal of the Level 2 Instructor Trainer certification program is ensure USA Archery Level 1 and Level 2 instructor certification courses are taught in a safe and consistent manner nationwide. Course Length: Online Exam- 50 questions

Course Cost: FREE

Certification Period: Three years from the date of course completion

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age is 18
  • Current Level 2 or higher USA Archery Instructor or Coach Certification

Certification Requirements:

  • Current USA Archery Level 2 or higher certification
  • Membership to USA Archery*, National Field Archery Association (NFAA), or Archery Shooters Association (ASA)
  • USA Archery Background Screening
  • SafeSport Training
  • Online Application
  • Must obtain a passing score of 100% on the Level 2 Instructor Trainer online exam;

USA Archery Level 3-NTS Coach Certification

The Level 3-NTS Coach Certification Course moves away from a group instruction and focuses on individual athlete development. Students in the Level 3-NTS Coach Certification Course will be introduced to coaching philosophy, event preparation, mental skills, training cycles and plans, equipment tuning and receive advanced instruction on the National Training System (NTS) for Recurve and Compound.

Course Length: 20-24 hours (Dependent on class size)

Certification Period: Three years from the date of course completion

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age is 19
  • Must hold a current Level 2 Instructor certification for a period of one year OR
  • Pass the Level 3 Test-in Exam* AND
  • Verify 3 years of documented archery instructor/coaching experience

*Instructors or coaches may also test-in to the Level 3-NTS course if they are not a Level 2 USA Archery Instructor if in addition to the prerequisites, at least one of the following must be met: 1) competed in the Olympics, Paralympics or World Championships, 2) trained in the USA Archery Resident Athlete Program or 3) current Level 3 or Level 4 Coach

USA Archery Level 3-NTS Coach Trainer Certification

The Level 3-NTS Coach Trainer certification is an additional certification current USA Archery Level 4-NTS and Level 5-NTS coaches may acquire if they would like to be eligible to teach the Level 3-NTS Coach course. The goal of the Level 3-NTS Coach Trainer certification program is to ensure USA Archery Level 3-NTS Coach certification courses are taught in a safe and consistent manner nationwide.

Course Information: Online Exam - 30 questions

Course Cost: FREE

Certification Period: Three years from the date of course completion 

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 21
  • Current Level 4-NTS or Level 5-NTS USA Archery Coach Certification

Certification Requirements:

  • Current USA Archery Level 4-NTS or higher certification
  • Membership to USA Archery*, National Field Archery Association (NFAA), or Archery Shooters Association (ASA)
  • USA Archery Background Screening
  • SafeSport Training
  • Online Application
  • Must successfully complete the Mental Management 101 and 102 Courses
  • Must successfully complete the Human Kinetics Coach Education - Coaching Principles Course
  • Must complete the Level 3-NTS Coach Trainer webinar/presentation and obtain a passing score of 90% or higher on the Level 3-NTS Coach Trainer Online exam.
  • Must complete one of the following:
    • Pass the Level 4-NTS Coach Course with an average of 85% or higher on the average of the written and practical exam (applies to coaches who took the Level 4-NTS course after 2012 - email at gkrueger@usarchery.org for exam scores).
    • Be a current Level 5-NTS certified coach.
    • Team teach a Level 3-NTS course with another approved Level 3-NTS Coach Trainer and receive approval marks by the Level 3-NTS Coach Trainer.

USA Archery Level 4-NTS Coach Certification

The Level 4-NTS Coach Certification Course is appropriate for current Level 3-NTS coaches who desire to advance their coaching skills and become eligible for USA Archery National Development Program and International Team Staff (ITS)** positions. The Level 4-NTS Coach will learn the education of sports science in archery, psychology and biomechanics with a large emphasis on the National Training System (NTS).

Course Length: One Week

Course Cost: Varies depending on Instructor

Certification Period: Three years from the date of course completion

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age is 21
  • Must hold a current Level 3-NTS Coach certification for a period of two years

Certification Requirements:

  • Membership to USA Archery*, the National Field Archery Association (NFAA) or Archery Shooters Association (ASA)
  • USA Archery Background Screening
  • SafeSport Training
  • Must pass a practical examination focused on the National Training System (NTS) where you describe and demonstrate in detail the steps of NTS using stretch bands for the National Head Coach
  • Must successfully complete the Mental Management 101 and 102 Courses (Effective January 1, 2016)

USA Archery Level 5-NTS Coach Certification

The Level 5-NTS Coach Certification Course is a self-paced, independent course which highlights the candidate's ability to coach archers to a high-performace level of achievement using the National Training System (NTS). Level 5-NTS Coaches have the highest knowledge of the NTS and have shown experience with applying the NTS through their coaching.

Course Length: Self-paced, independent course.

Certification Period: Three years from the date of course completion

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age is 23
  • Must be a current Level 4-NTS Coach for a period of two years

Certification Requirements:

  • Member of USA Archery*
  • *NFAA/ASA Partner Membership is authorized.
  • USA Archery Background Screening
  • SafeSport Training
  • Must successfully complete the Human Kinetics Coach Education - Coaching Principles Course
  • Must successfully complete the Mental Management 101 and 102 Courses
  • Must pass an interview with National Head Coach where your NTS knowledge will be evaluated
  • Must participate in and provide practical supervision in NTS through the Coach Observer Program
  • Serve as a Coach twice for the Junior Dream Team, Junior Olympic Archery Development, Para or Resident Athlete programs
  • Have personally coached three or more archers to one or more of the following:
    1. JOAD National podium place,
    2. Collegiate National podium place,
    3. Cadet USAT top-10 ranking,
    4. Jr. USAT top-10 ranking,
    5. Sr. USAT top-10 ranking or
    6. Olympic, World or International team member
  • Travel as Coach and/or Team Leader to two or more international events as a Level 5-NTS candidate
