Feb 05 Team USA Takes Three Trips to the Podium on Closing Day of Moscow World Cup

MOSCOW, Russia (February 5, 2012) – Team USA had a strong close to the Korean Air ISU World Cup today in Moscow, adding three medals to bring the team’s 2011-12 World Cup total to 17 medals.

 

Team USA’s ladies (Alyson Dudek (Hales Corners, WI), Tamara Fredrick (Park Ridge, IL), Lana Gehring (Glenview, IL) and Emily Scott (Springfield, MO) took silver in today’s relay with a time of 4:14.127. Team China won gold with 4:13.374, and the Netherlands won bronze with 4:24.114. The relay silver is Fredrick's first career World Cup medal.

 

Gehring also won bronze today in close 1500m (2) A final with a time of 2:27.993. Korea’s Eun-Byul Lee won gold with 2:27.775 and 1500m World Cup leader Ha-Ri Cho took silver with a time of 2:27.834. Scott took 2nd in today’s 1500m B final with a time of 2:24.909, finishing 8th overall

 

“I was happy with my results today, winning a bronze in the 1500m and silver in the Relay,” said Gehring. “I’m hoping to straighten up some of my mistakes next weekend and be able to compete even stronger at World Championships in Shanghai.”

 

J.R. Celski (Federal Way, WA) led the men with a bronze in today’s 1500m (2) A final, posting time of 2:22.656 in a close race with Jinkyu Noh (KOR), winning at 2:22.326, and Da Woon Sin (KOR) in second at 2:22.503.

 

Jordan Malone (Denton, TX) skated to 4th in the 1500m (2) B final with a time of 2:23.054. Travis Jayner (Midland, MI) fell in the last lap of the race finishing 5th (2:40.934).

 

Simon Cho (Laurel, MD) skated today’s 500m A final, but was penalized for impeding. Olivier Jean (CAN) skated gold with 41.080, Liam McFarlane won silver (41.237), and Hamelin took bronze (1:12.418) after a fall with two laps to go.

 

Dudek finished 6th overall today in the ladies 500m, and Jessica Smith (Melvindale,MI) finished 11th (44.076) skating today’s C final.

 

Team USA now travels to Dordrecht, NED for the sixth stop on the Korean Air ISU Short Track World Cup series. Racing begins in Dordrecht on Friday, February 10th. Extended results from the Moscow World Cup are available here
