Alana Nichols swept all five speed events at the NorAm Cup and national championships.
ASPEN, Colo. – Alana Nichols and Danelle Umstead won all five titles awarded in their classifications as the International Paralympic Committee Alpine Skiing NorAm Cup and U.S. national championships concluded today with the super-G.

Danelle Umstead and her guide Rob Umstead (Park City, Utah) won all five titles awarded in the women’s visually impaired class. Umstead started the week with the NorAm and national titles in downhill, the same event that she won bronze in at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. Umstead went on to win the national super combined national and super-G NorAm titles on Wednesday, and concluded her successful run by winning the national super-G on Thursday.

Four-time Paralympic winter medalist Alana Nichols (Farmington, N.M.) finished atop the podium for each race in the women’s sitting class. Nichols won each race by at least one second, and had her largest margin of victory in Tuesday’s NorAm downhill, which she won by more than five seconds.

Other athletes making multiple trips to the medal stand include Mark Bathum (Mercer Island, Wash.), Tyler Walker (Franconia, N.H.) and Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, Co.).  Bathum and his guide Cade Yamamoto (Quincy, Wash.) won four events in the men’s visually impaired class: the NorAm downhill and super-G and national downhill and super combined. Walker won the NorAm downhill and super-G, as well as the national super-combined in the men’s sitting class. Jones won the NorAm super-G and national super combined and super-G in the women’s standing class.

The NorAm and national championships marked Team USA’s final domestic competition before competing at the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup Finals in Tarvisio, Italy Feb. 24-17, and the  Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games March 7-16.
