COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. – Team USA’s women made it to the podium in every classification of the slalom races as the International Paralympic Committee Alpine Skiing NorAm Cup at Copper Mountain, Colo., concluded today.
With her win in the women’s standing slalom, Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.) continued her gold-medal streak at the NorAm competition. Jones clocked the fastest time on both runs, with her combined time giving her the win by more than five seconds. No other male or female athlete was able to finish the NorAm competition with an undefeated record.
Melanie Schwartz (Aspen, Colo.) grabbed the silver-medal spot in the women’s standing slalom. Schwartz medaled in the giant slalom earlier in the week with a bronze medal.
After being disqualified for a gate violation yesterday, Mark Bathum (Seattle, Wash.) and guide Slater Storey (Sun Valley, Idaho) were back to form to win bronze in the men’s visually impaired slalom. The duo was undefeated in super-G and giant slalom races earlier in the week, and leave Copper Mountain with five NorAm medals.
Laurie Stephens (Wenham, Mass.) continued her medal streak with a silver medal in the women’s sitting slalom. Stephens medaled in all six events of the NorAm competition, with two golds in super-G, two silvers in giant slalom and two silvers in slalom.
In the women’s visually impaired race, Danelle Umstead (Park City, Utah) and her guide Rob Umstead (Park City, Utah) made it to the podium for the first time this week. Danelle raced to bronze in today’s race after her earlier performances were affected by illness.
While the race was not a world cup, athletes earned points that help determine world rankings and qualification for IPC Alpine Skiing World Cups and Paralympic events. Scoring is based on finishing place, with athletes aiming for as few points as possible. To qualify for world cups and ultimately the Paralympic Winter Games in each discipline, athletes must remain under a certain point threshold.
The U.S. Paralympics Alpine Skiing National Team will return to action Jan. 1-3 at the IPC Alpine Skiing NorAm Cup at Winter Park, Colo.
