COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. – Jamie Stanton had a standout performance to lead Team USA to six podium finishes in the giant slalom races on Monday at the first International Paralympic Committee Alpine Skiing NorAm Cup of the season.
Stanton made it to the top of the podium in the men’s standing giant slalom. Stanton’s win adds to an already impressive season for the sophomore from the University of Denver, earlier this year Stanton made three world cup podiums in Australia and New Zealand.
Tyler Walker was back on the podium as he took gold in the men’s sitting giant slalom. Walker now owns two medals from the NorAm Competition as he won silver in Saturday’s super-G.
Mark Bathum, a 2010 Paralympic Winter Games silver medalist, won his third race of the competition in the men’s visually-impaired classification. Bathum and his guide Slater Storey won both of the men’s super-G races over the weekend.
Six-time Paralympian Allison Jones picked up her third win in as many days of competition. Jones won gold in the women’s standing giant slalom, after picking up two wins in the super-G races. Stephanie Jallen was close behind to claim silver.
2010 Paralympic Winter Games silver medalist and the current downhill world champion Laurie Stephens picked up her third medal of the competition. Stephens added to her two super-G gold medals with a silver in the women’s sitting giant slalom.
While the race is not a world cup, athletes will earn points that help determine world rankings and qualification for IPC Alpine Skiing World Cups and Paralympic events. Scoring is based on finishing place, with athletes aiming for as few points as possible. To qualify for world cups and ultimately the Paralympic Winter Games in each discipline, athletes must remain under a certain point threshold.
Competition at Copper Mountain runs through Dec. 12, with an additional day of giant slalom races, and two days of slalom races. The next IPC Alpine Skiing NorAm set for Jan. 1-3, 2014 in Winter Park, Colo.
