COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ― U.S. Paralympics, a division of the United States Olympic Committee, today announced that 25 athletes have been selected to compete for the United States at the 2013 International Paralympic Committee Swimming World Championships, Aug. 11-17, in Montreal, Canada. The event is the first major swimming competition since the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
“In Montreal, U.S. Paralympics will be represented by both seasoned and up and coming, extremely talented athletes,” said Queenie Nichols, USOC high performance director for Paralympic swimming. “While we look forward to our veteran athletes continuing the momentum of Team USA’s 41-medal performance at the recent Paralympic Games, there are many new athletes who will be starting their legacy this season. Team USA is a mixture of today’s best Paralympic swimmers and the faces of the future, which will make for a truly exciting IPC Swimming World Championships.”
Highlighting the roster are London gold medalists Victoria Arlen (Exeter, N.H.), Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md.), Ian Silverman (Baltimore, Md.) and Justin Zook (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.). Team USA had 18 swimmers win a combined 41 medals at the 2012 London Paralympic Games, including eight for Long, the USOC’s Paralympic SportsWoman of the Year.
Athletes were selected to compete in Montreal based on their performances at the 2013 U.S. Paralympics Spring Swimming National Championships/2013 Spring CanAm, which ended Saturday at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. At the competition, three Americans set five world records, including two for Silverman and Kayla Wheeler (Seattle, Wash.). Silverman set a world record in the men’s 800 meter freestyle (S10) and 1500m freestyle (S10). Wheeler swam a world record 1:37.34 in the women’s 50m butterfly (S1) preliminary race then bested that in the final with a 1:30.57.
Team USA won 57 medals (20 gold, 18 silver and 19 bronze) at the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
