U.S. Paralympics Powerlifting Team named for IPC World Championships
The U.S. Paralympics Powerlifting Team that will compete at the 2010 IPC Powerlifting World Championships has been announced. The competition is set for July 25-31 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The women's roster includes Chelsi Figley (East Palestine, Ohio) and three-time Paralympian Mary Stack (Ann Harbour, Mich.) On the men's side, Shafik Ahmed (Tucson, Ariz.), Tyker Brey (Rocklin, Calif.), Leroy Sutton (Cleveland, Ohio) and Jake Schrom (University Park, Pa.) are all making their debut on the U.S. squad, while Paralympians Kim Brownfield (Council Hill, Okla.) and Anderson Wise (Needham, Mass.) bring experience to the roster.
The athletes qualified by competing in the 2010 IPC Powerlifting U.S.A. Championships, and by competing in the 2010 World Championships, the athletes will be able to qualify for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
U.S. head coach Mary Hodge said she feels positive about the team's chances at the championships.
"We are excited to have a new strong group of lifters to represent our country. They have worked hard and know Powerlifting is not only a sport, but a lifestyle," said Hodge.
