Team USA upsets Canada in pairs competition at World Boccia Championships

June 02, 2010, 1:50 p.m. (ET)

Team USA Pairs took on fifth ranked Canada in their second match in pool play, after beating Slovakia in Round 1.

USA pairs players Austin Hanson and Sam Williams were down 4 - 0 going into the third end, with Canada scoring two points each in the first and second end. Pairs alternate, Lee Lobmeyer replaced Williams in the third end. Lobmeyer had the toss of the jack and followed up with her blue ball which overshot the jack leaving it wide open. Canada took advantage of this and kissed the jack and the battle was on! Lobmeyer came back with a close shot but not enough to change the color of the paddle. Her third shot placed close however it was Hanson's years of training that came through in this end as Austin placed his first ball upon the jack and proceed to jump his second ball up and over to settle on the north side of the jack in scoring range.

As if this were not dramatic enough, Hanson's final ball propelled up and off of the competitor's ball landing on top of Lee Lobmeyer’s previously thrown ball and the jack, to claim four points and tie the game.  Canada was not prepared to give up easily and led the fourth end with their first three throws. Lobmeyer and Hanson played a strategic end to win two points with only four thrown balls. Lobmeyer and Hanson both each threw off their last ball having secured the win over fifth place Canadian Pairs.

This moves USA Pairs out of pool play with an undefeated record. USA plays Belgium Thursday morning.
