Sled Hockey Splits Weekend Series with Canada
TORONTO, Ont. – Goaltender Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.) stopped two of three shootout attempts and 13 of 14 shots overall, as the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team defeated Canada, 2-1, in a shootout tonight. Team USA split the two-game exhibition series with Canada, the first of several tune-ups leading to the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C., March 13-20.
“It feels great to get our first win tonight," said Ray Maluta, head coach of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team. "Both games this series were one-goal games, and I expect we'll see a lot of tight games leading up to the Paralympics."
Canada took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a power-play goal by Brad Bowden. Team USA responded midway through the second period, however. Adam Page (Lancaster, N.Y.) held the puck in Canada's zone along the wall and dropped a pass to defenseman Taylor Chace (Hampton Falls, N.H.) at the blue line. Chace flicked a long shot through traffic and over Canada goalie Paul Rosen.
After a scoreless third period and overtime, the two teams went to a shootout. Team USA's Taylor Lipsett (Mesquite, Texas) and Joe Howard (Kingston, Mass.) scored on similar moves, cutting across the crease from left to right before lifting shots over the diving goaltender. Meanwhile, Cash made the game-winning save with his blocker on Canada's third and final attempt.
