BOGOGNO, Italy--The U.S. women dominated the road in Italy on Friday, collecting five medals on the second day of competition at the 2009 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships, brining Team USA's total medal haul to seven.
Barb Buchan (Bend, Ore.) and Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.) went one-two in the women's CP3/LC3 time trial to take gold and silver. Also winning gold were Karissa Whitsell (Eugene, Ore.) and her pilot Mackenzie Woodring (Grand Rapids, Mich.) in the women's blind/visually impaired time trial. Two silver medals came from Jennifer Schuble (Homewood, Ala.) in the CP4/LC2 time trial and Greta Neimanas (Chicago, Ill.) in the LC1 time trial.
While the men didn't hit the podium on the second day, all three athlete's competing on the men's side had strong showings in their respective time trial events. Mike Farrell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished eighth and Craig Vogtsberger (Kalamazoo, Mich.) took ninth in the CP4 category, while Clark Rachfal (Annapolis, Md.) and pilot Dave Swanson (Tucson, Ariz.) finished fifth in the blind/visually impaired category.
Competition continues on Saturday with the men's road race.
