U.S. Sled Team 2-0 at World Championships
OSTRAVA, Czech Republic - Taylor Lipsett (Mesquite, Texas) scored with 2:03 left in the game to lead the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team to a 2-1 win over Korea in its second game at the 2009 International Paralympic Committee Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship.
"This was a great game between two very good teams," said Ray Maluta, head coach of Team USA. "We played very well, especially in the final period, but we will have to be sure to cash in on some of our missed scoring opportunities as we advance in the tournament."
After a scoreless opening period, Adam Page (Lancaster, N.Y.) put the U.S. on the scoreboard with a power-play goal at 10:00 of the second stanza. Page carried the puck over the blue line and shot a hard wrister over the left shoulder of Korean netminder Hyuk Jun Choi for a 1-0 advantage. Korea scored off a U.S. turnover 1:25 later and the teams remained tied after 30 minutes of play.
Taylor Chace (Hampton Falls, N.H.) sent a great pass to Lipsett, who rifled a shot over Choi's left shoulder at 12:57 of the final period to account for the 2-1 final.
Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.) made 12 saves in the win.
Team USA continues play in the IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship when it faces Norway on Tuesday (May 12) at 10 a.m. EDT. This game will be webcast live on ParalympicSport.tv.
