USABA to Host International Games This SummerCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--The U.S. Association of Blind Athletes (USABA) is pleased to play host to the 2009 International Blind Sport Association (IBSA) World Youth & Student Championships and the 2009 IBSA Pan American Games to be held in Colorado Springs, Colo. July 15-20, 2009.
All IBSA federations from around the world have been invited to participate, 15 of which have already committed to attend. This prestigious event is full of intense competition amongst the world's top blind and visually impaired athletes in the sports of swimming, judo, track and field and goalball, a team sport specifically for the blind and visually impaired. Every country in the Americas have been invited to participate in the IBSA Pan American Games. Youth, ages 12 to 19, from around the globe have been invited to participate in the IBSA World Youth and Student Championships. More than 350 athletes will reside in the Athlete Village at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo. for the games.
Team USA will also be in attendance with more than eighty athletes competing in both the IBSA Pan American Games and the IBSA World Youth and Student Championships. Many of the United States' up and coming blind and visually impaired youth athletes will compete in the World Youth and Student Championships with the hopes of taking their game to the next level, including for some representing their country by competing in the 2012 London Paralympic Games.
The festivities will kick-off Thursday, July 16th at 7:30 p.m. with the Opening Ceremonies, resembling the Olympic parade of nations. The Games conclude with the Closing Ceremonies and Sunday evening, July 19th.
