U.S. Women Win Sitting Volleyball Euro Cup
ROERMOND, Netherlands - The U.S. Women's Sitting Volleyball team are Euro Cup Champions after shocking The Netherlands, the host nation, in the finals.
The team swept the Dutch in dominating fashion in 3 sets (25-16, 25-7, 25-12) on Thursday, at 4 p.m. local time. Seemingly making a habit of it, the U.S. team also beat the Dutch in the semi-finals of the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing.
The large partisan crowd was never a factor as the U.S. women jumped out early and never let the host team come back into the match.
Head Coach Bill Hamiter was very pleased and commented that, "This was a great win for the ladies and a huge step forward for our program. It's a good indicator of the progress of our team as we set our sights on winning a World Championship and a gold medal in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. I am excited to see the tea m play as well as they did and to witness some amazing individual performances."
Leading the U.S. statistically was Katie Holloway and Brenda Maymon each with 11 points closely followed by Lora Webster with 9 points, and Heather Erickson and Nicole Millage with 8 points.
Individual U.S. Women's team members were also honored with awards as Katie Holloway was honored as the tournament's Best Blocker, Heather Erickson won Best Hitter, Allison Aldrich was Best Server, and Kari Miller was Best Libero.
The Women's Sitting Volleyball Team trains at the University of Central Oklahoma, a Paralympic Training Site. The team won silver at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing.
