VANCOUVER, B.C. - Behind goals from Josh Pauls (South Plainfield, N.J.) and Taylor Chace (Hampton Falls, N.H.), the U.S. Paralympics Sled Hockey National Team posted a 2-0 victory over Germany in the 2009 Hockey Canada Cup at the UBC Thunderbird Arena. With the win, Team USA improved to 1-0-0-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) and will face the losing team from the Canada versus Japan game in the semifinals on Saturday (Feb. 28 - time TBA).
"It was a win that we needed," said Team USA Head Coach Ray Maluta. "We played really really well defensively. Going into the semis, we hope to continue to play well and get the chance to move on to the championship game."
Pauls, the youngest member of Team USA at 18 years old, opened the scoring with his first career goal when he found a loose puck in front of the German net and put it top shelf at 10:43 of the first period for the eventual game-winner.
Chace added insurance with a power-play tally just :48 into period No. 2 and Team USA held the Germans shotless until late in the second stanza.
Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.) recorded five saves to earn the shutout in net for the U.S.
NOTES: The U.S. out shot Germany by a 12-5 count ... Team USA was 1-for-4 on the power play, while holding Germany scoreless on five man-advantage chances ... The 2009 Hockey Canada Cup features Canada, Germany, Japan and the United States and takes place at the UBC Thunderbird Arena, which is the slegde hockey venue for the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games ... The tournament championship game will be broadcast live on TSN2 on Sunday, March 1, at 8 p.m. EST. The game will also be televised on TSN at midnight.
