VANCOUVER, B.C. - The U.S. Paralympics Sled Hockey National Team was edged by Canada, 2-1, on Wednesday night in the second game of the 2009 Hockey Canada Cup at the UBC Thunderbird Arena. Chris Manns (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored for Team USA, which will take on Germany Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. (4 p.m. EST) in preliminary-round action.
"We played much better tonight," said Team USA Head Coach Ray Maluta. "The second period was our best as a team. We played really really well and were extremely spirited. I'm very pleased with the effort."
Billy Bridges scored both Canadian goals in the opening frame, first at 5:12, then at 8:25, to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.
In the second frame, while outshooting Canada by an 8-2 count, the Americans cut their deficit in half when Manns tipped in a Mike Hallman (Hatboro, Pa.) shot from the point at the 10:59 mark.
Neither team scored in the final stanza, as the 2-1 score held until the final buzzer.
NOTES: The U.S. and Canada each put up 13 shots on goal ... Team USA was 0-for-3 on the power play, while holding the Canadians scoreless on six man-advantage opportunities ... The 2009 Hockey Canada Cup features Canada, Germany, Japan and the United States and takes place at the UBC Thunderbird Arena, which is the slegde hockey venue for the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games ... The tournament championship game will be broadcast live on TSN2 on Sunday, March 1, at 8 p.m. EST. The game will also be televised on TSN at midnight.
