COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The third annual Hockey Weekend Across America, presented by Reebok -- a three-day nationwide celebration of the sport of hockey -- will take place Jan. 29-31, 2010.
Each of the three days associated with Hockey Weekend Across America has a theme, including Wear Your Favorite Hockey Jersey, presented by ShopUSAHockey.com on Friday; Bring A Friend to the Rink, presented by the NHL on Saturday and Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes Day, presented by Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports on Sunday.
"After two incredibly successful years, Hockey Weekend Across America continues to be one of our most important initiatives," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "With the full support of the entire hockey community, this weekend will help us expand our game while properly honoring those who have brought us this far."
HockeyWeekendAcrossAmerica.com will serve as the information hub for the event. It features material for download, including the event logo, poster and both video and audio public service announcements. Additional information will continue to be added, including highlights of activities planned in conjunction with Hockey Weekend Across America, from around the country.
New for 2010 is a " Why Hockey Rocks" video contest. Beginning this Friday (Dec. 11), fans can upload up to 60-second videos outlining why they believe hockey is the greatest sport. Following a voting process that will begin Jan. 1, a total of 16 winners will receive a minimum of $300 in Reebok Hockey merchandise, while the overall winner will collect $2,500 in Reebok Hockey gear. USA Hockey is also conducting a best Hockey Weekend Across America programming contest for its local associations across the country, with the grand-prize winner receiving a voucher for $5,000 of Reebok Hockey gear. Additionally, four runners-up will receive $1,000 of Reebok Hockey goods. The entry form can be obtained at HockeyWeekendAcrossAmerica.com.
NOTES: Hockey Weekend Across America was created by USA Hockey in 2008 to engage the hockey community in celebrating the sport of hockey at all levels and exposing the sport to new audiences ... Hockey Day in Michigan is slated for Jan. 30 as part of Hockey Weekend Across America ... USA Hockey is organizing a Try Hockey for Free event as part of Hockey Weekend Across America. All participating rinks are required to hold the free trial at a consistent time of 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. local time. The final goal is to get as many first-time players on the ice and later transition them to eah host site's full-time programs. From Jan. 29-31, disabled hockey players from all four disciplines (sled, deaf/hard of hearing, standing amputee and special hockey) will visit all 54 rinks in the state of New Jersey in conjunction with Hockey Weekend Across America. Their goal will be to raise awareness for disabled hockey among disabled athletes and encourage rinks to support new or existing disabled hockey programs ... All rinks in the country have received two printed copies of Hockey Weekend Across America postesr. Anyone may download the artwork for all four versions of this year's poster at HockeyWeekendAcrossAmerica.com and have posters printed for use in conjunction with the event ... All NHL, minor professional, NCAA Division I and III men's and women's, United States Hockey League and North American Hockey League teams playing at home during Hockey Weekend Across America will receive Hockey Weekend Across America pucks to utilize as part of a ceremonial puck drop to help celebrate the event.
