2008 PARALYMPIC GAMES: U.S. Archer Fabry Wins Bronze

Sept. 14, 2008, 2:50 p.m. (ET)
BEIJING, China -- Coming off setting two records on Friday, Jeff Fabry (Tulare, Calif.) and opponent John Cavanagh of Great Britain kicked-off the first match of the last day for individual competition.

Fabry's first arrow in the semi-final match proved perfect and kept him and Cavanagh neck-and-neck after the first end. Fabry faltered with an eight in the second end, putting him a point behind his opponent but with two more ends to go. Fabry's two-point loss was sealed in the third end when Cavanagh shot two tens and Fabry didn't match either. The match ended with the pair tied with three tens each, but Cavanagh had maintained his two-point edge with a score of 109 to Fabry's 107.

Five minutes after his loss, Fabry was ushered to the bronze medal match against Osmo Kinnunen of Finland; the very archer whose Paralympic record Fabry broke just two days ago. Winning by ten points, Fabry's bronze medal almost seemed effortless. He surpassed his previous match's score with a 111, and managed four perfect arrows to Kinnunen's two. Fabry's success adds to Lindsey Carmichael's (Lago Vista, Texas) bronze medal from yesterday's Women's Individual Recurve-Standing finals.
