COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--The City of Colorado Springs Therapeutic Recreation Program, a program of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services and an official Paralympic Sport Club, is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the first-ever Paralympic Academy in the Pikes Peak Region in conjunction with U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee.  The event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Olympic Training Center.

"We are very excited to be hosting our first event as an official Paralympic Sport Club and look forward to a long-lasting partnership with U.S. Paralympics," says Paul Butcher, Director of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services.  "The Paralympic Sport Club enhances our existing recreation programs and offers a new opportunity for people with physical disabilities in our community to participate in sports."

The Colorado Springs Paralympic Academy will introduce people with physical disabilities (ages 12 and up) to Paralympic sports.  In addition to hands-on participation in sit volleyball, wheelchair basketball, handcycling and goalball, the participants will interact with Paralympic athletes and coaches.  There will also be educational sessions on Paralympic sports for parents, teachers, coaches, program leaders and rehabilitation specialists.

"The Paralympic Academy program encourages physical fitness and overall well-being in people with physical disabilities, and we are thrilled to be working with the City of Colorado Springs on this initiative," said Charlie Huebner, Chief of U.S. Paralympics.  "Together, we will inspire and encourage more people with physical disabilities to be physically active."

Paralympic Academies are being held in 50 communities throughout the country.  For registration information on the Colorado Springs event, visit, call 719-385-6855 or e-mail mailto:    Participation in the Academy is free.
