U.S. Finishes in Third Place at 2008 World Sledge Hockey Challenge

Nov. 22, 2008, 6:27 p.m. (ET)
CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island – The U.S. National Sled Hockey Team defeated Japan, 9-0, this afternoon in the third-place game of the 2008 World Sledge Hockey Challenge at the CARI Complex. Team USA outshot Japan, 30-3, in the win and finished the tournament with a 2-0-0-2 record (W-OTW-OTL-L).

"This was a total team game with terrific puck movement," said Ray Maluta, head coach for Team USA. "Our guys were hungry and I am excited to see the team build off of this tournament and continue to grow."

Tim Jones (Mt. Ephraim, N.J.) gave the United States an early lead at 2:04 of the opening period. After Team USA went up 2-0 at 10:48, Brad Emmerson (Amherst, N.Y.) scored less than two minutes later, as Team USA took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

The U.S. squad scored four more goals in the middle frame, including two tallies by Taylor Lipsett (Mesquite, Texas). On his first goal, with time in front of the net, Lipsett scooped the puck up with his blade, faked a shot to the left side, turned and shot the puck behind his back for a lacrosse-style score at 4:21. Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.) remained perfect in net and the score remained 7-0 after 30 minutes.

Team USA found the back of the net twice more in the final period, including Emmerson's second of the game, to put the United States up by nine. Mike Blabac (Buffalo, N.Y.), who replaced Cash in the U.S. net for the third period, preserved the shutout for Team USA.

NOTES: Taylor Lipsett earned U.S. Player of the Game honors ... Six players had multi-point game and a total of 10 factored in the scoring ... Teams that participated in the 2008 World Sledge Hockey Challenge included Canada, Japan, Norway and the United States ... The 17 players on the U.S. roster represent nine different states ...
