U.S. PARALYMPICS: Paralympic Mono-skiers get LIVE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 25, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - This weekend, Paralympic athletes will compete in the only Mono Skier X event in the world at Winter X Games 12 in Aspen, Colo., and the finals will be broadcast live on ESPN, Sunday at 4:30 p.m. EST. U.S. Paralympians Kevin Bramble (Cape May Court House, N.J.), Carl Burnett (Winter Park, Colo.), Chris Devlin-Young (Campton, N.H.), Gerald Hayden (Merced, Calif.), and Tyler Walker (Franconia, N.H.) are among the field of competitors in this event. It was reported this morning by Ray Watkins, head coach of the U.S. National Team, that Devlin-Young qualified first, Walker, last year's event winner, qualified second and Bramble third on Thursday for the next round of competition today at 4:00 p.m. EST. "This event is an opportunity to show what athletes with physical disabilities are capable of doing," said Kevin Jardine, Event Organizer for Mono Skier X. "Our athletes are running the same course as the able-bodied athletes. It is a tough course. Our guys are going to spend as much time in the air as on the snow. It's going to be exciting." The Mono Skier X event is in its second year at Winter X Games. It debuted as a demo event in 2005 and made the jump to a medal event last year at Winter X Games 11. It is modeled after the ski and boardercross events and is run on the same course. A mono-ski is a piece of equipment that enables people with disabilities affecting their legs to ski sitting down. This marks the first time ever that the Mono Skier X competition will be broadcast live. There will also be a live webcast, today at 4:00 p.m. EST, on espn.com during the semi-finals and consolation round.
