POKLJUKA, Slovenia (March 9, 2014) – Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, NY) had a strong race today placing 7th in the 15-kilometer mass start with a time of 36:17.9/+2. Burke was just 58.6 seconds back from today’s winner Bjoern Ferry (SWE), shooting clean and crossing the finish at 35:19.3. World Cup leader Martin Fourcade (FRA) was second (35:24/+0), and Evgeny Ustyugov (RUS_ was third (35:31.8/+0).
“It was great to be back in the mix today fighting for a podium,” said Burke. “Of course I was disappointed with my two penalties in the last stage, but that's just the way biathlon goes sometimes. I am feeling better and better with each race, so I am excited to see what next week brings.”
Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, NY) finished 20th today (37:30.2/+4) “I felt good throughout the race and just had bad luck in the third shooting,” said Bailey. “I have no excuses why I missed; the wind was calm, I was in control and stable in my shooting position, but I just couldn't get them to fall. It was a great opportunity and I'm definitely pretty bummed that I couldn't capitalize on the good start. Now it's all about refocusing and moving on to the next World Cup. Congrats to Tim for solid seventh place!”
