OBERHOF, Germany (January 5, 2014) – Despite a fall in the last lap of the race, Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, NY) had a strong performance in today’s 15-kilometer mass start in Oberhof, finishing 9th with a time of 38:10.7 and two penalties. Burke was 31.3 seconds back from World Cup leader Martin Fourcade (FRA), winning with a time of 37:39.4 and one penalty. Alexey Volkov (RUS) was second (37:44.6/+0) and Tarjei Boe (NOR) was third (37:58.4/+2). Extended results from the men’s mass start are available here.
“I was happy with my performance today,” said Burke. “It was nice to get back on track after a rough sprint race. I felt strong on the track today, and feel like I am right where I want to be with Sochi just one month away. My only disappointment today was that I hit a rock on the last loop that caused me to crash, which definitely cost me a few places. Now I am looking forward to Ruhpolding, and hopefully seeing the sun for the first time in a week!”
IBU World Cup competition continues in Ruhpolding, Germany on Wednesday, opening with the women’s 4x6km relay. A complete schedule for World Cup 5 can be found here.
Racing will be webcast live here.
