PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (February 28, 2014) – Fresh off his Olympic debut in Sochi last week, Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.) won the youth men’s 7.5-kilometer sprint at today’s IBU Junior World Championships. Doherty posted a time of 19:35.0 with four penalties to finish 1.7 seconds ahead of Marco Gross (GER) in second with a time of 19:36.7/+2. Dmitrii Shamaev (RUS) was third (19:53.9/+3).
“I am very happy to have such a good result on American soil,” said Doherty. “The home crowd was amazing. The skis were great. Now to get my shooting back on track for the pursuit.” At the 2013 Junior World Championships, Doherty won three medals - gold (pursuit), silver (individual, sprint)
Kamran Muneer Husain (Fort Kent, Maine) finished 43rd (22:06.5/+5), and Brian Halligan (Gansevoort, N.Y.) 47th (22:14.5/+7). Paul Everett (Tacoma, WA) did not start. Extended results from the youth men’s sprint are available here.
Madeleine Grace Phaneuf (Old Forge, N.Y.) posted 4th in the youth women’s 6k sprint with clean shooting and a time of 19:49.3, just 41.1 seconds off the podium. Lisa Vittozzi (ITA) won the sprint (18:49.9/+1), Anna Weidel (GER) took second (19:02.9/+1), and Julia Simon (FRA) finished third (19:08.2/+1).
Anna Kubek (Duluth, MN) finished 24th (20:58.8/+3), Siena Ellingson (Minnetonka, MN) was 39th (22:18.0/+3), and Mikaela Paluszek (Fort Kent, Maine) finished 43rd (22:49.5/+6). Full results from the youth women’s sprint are available here.
