SOCHI, Russia (February 14, 2014) – Hannah Dreissigacker (Morrisville, Vt.) finished 23rd in the women's biathlon 15km individual event, held Friday evening at the Laura Cross-Country Ski and Biathlon Center.
Dreissigacker's time of 47:51.1, with two penalties, was 4:32.1 behind Darya Domracheva of Belarus, who claimed the gold medal with a time of 43:19.6/+1. The silver medal went to Switzerland's Selina Gasparin, who shot clean and crossed the finish line at 44:35.3, while the bronze medal was won by Nadezhda Skardino of Belarus with clean shooting and a time of 44:57.8.
Coming off a strong performance with just two penalties, Dreissigacker was satisfied with her race. “I’ve had a really up and down year,’ she said. “I’ve had some really good relay races, but I haven’t had an individual race come together. I’ve been waiting for that to happen. I’ve been working on the mental piece and that really worked today.”
Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) was 34th with a time of 48:54.1/+5; Sara Studebaker (Boise, Idaho) was 55th in 50:53.4/+4; and Lanny Barnes (Durango, Colo.) finished in 64th place with a time of 53:02.2/+3.
Barnes competed in her first race of the Games tonight with her twin sister Tracy watching from the stands. During Olympic qualifying races for the U.S. Biathlon Team, Tracy declined her spot on the Olympic team so Lanny could be part of the team after Lanny was unable to finish the Olympic qualifying races due to illness.
Tonight marked the first time the sisters had seen each other since the Olympic qualifiers.
“Having Tracy there meant more to me than anything in my biathlon career this far,” said Lanny. “I went out there to give everything I had for her and ended up dying a slow, painful death, but you’ve got to for it and I was going for it for her. It made me happy to see her out there.”
Extended results from today’s 15k individual are available here.
Olympic competition resumes at the Laura Cross-Country Ski and Biathlon Center on Saturday with the men’s mass start. Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, NY) and Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, NY) will race for Team USA. Tune in and watch live at 10am (ET) here.
