OBERTILLIACH, Austria (January 25, 2013) -  Sean Doherty (Center Conway, NH) won silver today in the 7.5-kilometer sprint opener at the 2013 IBU Youth/Junior World Championships in Obertilliach, Austria. Doherty had an outstanding race, posting a time of 21:16.0 (1+1), just 3.6 seconds back from France's Fabian Claude, winning with a time of 21:12.4 (0+2). Rene Zahkna (EST) took third with a time of 21:27.3 (0+1).

Doherty had the fourth fastest skiing time today, and climbed five positions on the last lap of the race to finish second. "It is hard to believe that I have worked all of this time towards this goal but now it is here I am still a little bit in shock," said Doherty. "My strategy today was no different than any other race. I stared the two laps skiing well but under control. On the last lap I got a split from my coach that I was in fifth, really close to third, and I just gave it my all on the last lap. My main goal is to keep calm in the pursuit and have a really good race." Doherty will race in Sunday's 10-kilometer pursuit. A start list is available here. "We are very exited about Sean's race today," said U.S. Biathlon Coach Vladimir Cervenka. "He did great and according his plan he saved his best for the last loop. It will be fun to watch the pursuit on Sunday."

This is the first World Championship podium for 17-year-old Doherty, and his third trip to the IBU Youth/Junior World Championships. Doherty was also a member of the mixed U.S. Biathlon relay team that won bronze at the 2012 Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria. Doherty's podium continues a tradition of strong performances by Team USA men at the IBU Youth/Junior World Championships. Jay Hakkinen (Kasilof, AK) won gold in the sprint in 1997 and Leif Nordgren (Marine, MN) won bronze in the 2008 pursuit.

Jakob Ellingson (Minnetonka, MN) finished 62nd in today's sprint with a time of 24:37.9 (3+1), Jordan McElroy (Truckee, CA) was 79th (25:20.4/2+3), and Brian Halligan (Gansevoort, NY) finished 88th (26:21.6/4+5).
