HOCHFILZEN, Austria (December 6, 2013) – Despite uneven weather conditions – including strong winds and heavy snow – Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, NY) and Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, NY) had the top two finishes for Team USA today, placing 16th and 24th , respectively, in the 10-kilometer sprint. Bailey faced the brunt of the storm, starting in the middle of the pack with bib #52. With clean shooting, and a time of 26:04.2, Bailey was 1:02.2 back from today’s winner Lars Berger (NOR), posting 25:02.0/+2.
World Cup leader Martin Fourcade (FRA) was second (25:15.6/0), and Ole Einar Bjoerndalen (NOR) took third with a time of 25:17.3/+1. Burke had a time of 26:25.4 with two penalties. Burke and Bailey will race for Team USA in Sunday’s 12.5k pursuit.
Jeremy Teela (Heber City, UT) finished 65th (27:39.8/+2), and Sean Doherty (Center Conway, NH) finished 99th (29:51.3/+5). Leif Nordgren (Marine, MN) did not start in today’s race due to illness.

With an earlier start, the weather was more favorable for the women’s 7.5 km sprint, but a snowfall overnight blanketed the course with fresh snow, adding a challenge for the field of 107 competitors.
Selina Gasparin (SUI) won with a time of 23:16.9/+1, Veronika Vitkova (CZE) took second posting 23:18.1/0, and Irina Starykh (RUS) finished third (23:19.0/0)
Lanny Barnes (Durango, CO) finished 65th (25:33.2/+1), Susan Dunklee (Barton, VT) was 66th (25:34.7/+4), Hannah Dreissigacker (Morrisville, VT) 71st (25:41.4/+4), and Annelies Cook (Saranac Lake, NY) finished 79th (25:55.4/+4). Extended results are available here.
