Jan 06 Burke 30th in Oberhof Pursuit

OBERHOF, Germany (January 6, 2013) -  Steady rain and fog continued in Oberhof today to close World Cup 4. Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, NY) posted the top finish for Team USA - 30th - with a time of 35:58.1 with four penalties. Cleaning his first two stages in prone, Burke was 3:35 minutes back from today's winner Dmitry Malyshko (RUS), shooting clean and posting a time of 32:22 for his third trip to the top of podium this weekend, winning both individual races and anchoring the Russian Relay team. Evgeniy Garanichev (RUS) took second with a time of 33:05.0 and one penalty in standing. Ondrej Moravec (CZE) finished third  with clean shooting and a time of 33:12.8.

 

"I was very tired today," said Burke. "I just did not have anything right from the start of the race. I am looking forward to a few easy days before racing next week in Ruhpolding. I think all of us are excited to leave the rain and fog of Oberhof behind!"

 

Cleaning his first two trips to the range in prone, Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, NY) finished 42nd today, up from a start at 51, with a time of 37:06.8 and four penalties in standing. Leif Nordgren (Marine, MN) finished 48th today with a time of 37:21.8 and six penalties. Extended results from today's 12.5k men's Pursuit are available here

 

Sara Studebaker (Boise, ID) did not start in today's 10k Pursuit due to illness. Olga Zaitseva (RUS) won today's 10k Pursuit with a time of 32:01.9 and three penalties. Veronika Vitkova (CZE) finished second (32:27.8/+1), and Valj Semerenko (UKR) took third with a time of 32:30.3 and one penalty. Extended results from the women's Pursuit can be found here.

 

Closing World Cup 4, Burke sits at 11th in overall World Cup standings, and the U.S. men's team ranks 11th in Nations Cup standings. 

 

Team USA heads to Ruhpolding, Germany for the 5th stop of the IBU World Cup series. Competition opens Wednesday with the women's Relay beginning at 12:15pm (ET).
