If there’s one thing Meryl and I always remind ourselves of when we take the ice to compete, it’s to leave “it” all out on the ice. “It” is the thousands of hours of practice, all of the instruction from our coaches, the love and support from our families, our love for what we do, and our competitive spirits. Through all of our experiences, we’ve found there’s nothing worse than getting off the ice and realizing you had more to give; it makes you wish you could turn around and start the competition from the beginning.
Meryl and I will remember this as a season when we gave everything we had. Each practice, each competition, and each performance had the right purpose and attitude. From the beginning to the end, we grew along with our programs, and became stronger along with our programs. Coming into these past World Championships, we knew there was nothing more we could have done to prepare ourselves. We skated our two best programs of the season by far, and it felt like the final step in the progression.
Winning those gold medals felt a lot like being able to breathe a huge sigh of relief. A lot of people were asking if we wanted to win these championships so we could have the momentum of being world champions heading into the Olympics. The truth is we wanted to win because this was a special year in and of itself. As was the year before, and the year before that. Meryl and I continue to strive to live in the moment; enjoying these special moments always helps us realize why we do what we do, and how lucky we are to be able to do it.
Already, the next moment is upon us. The season of the Olympic Winter Games has found its way back, after what has felt like both an eternity and a blip of time. And we’ve found ourselves back at the rink already, ready once again to leave it all out on the ice.
