About Melanie Lockwood Herman
Melanie Lockwood Herman is an executive director of the Nonprofit Risk Management Center, a widely recognized nonprofit resource center serving nonprofits in the U.S. and internationally. She has held management positions in nonprofit organizations throughout her 30-year career. She manages the center’s consulting practice, and each year serves as the lead consultant on projects for large, complex nonprofit organizations.
Lockwood Herman is the author of more than 15 books covering a wide range of risk management issues. Each year she delivers numerous workshops, seminars and keynote presentations on topics ranging from effective governance to managing human resource risk. In August 2013, she was named to the 16th annual NonProfit Times Power & Influence Top 50 List. This is Lockwood Herman’s fifth appearance on the NPT Power & Influence Top 50: she was first recognized in 2007 and then again in 2008, 2011 and 2012.
Lockwood Herman earned her bachelor’s degree in urban affairs from American University. She later earned her JD from George Mason University. Lockwood Herman is a member of the DC Bar Association and is an active volunteer in both professional organizations and community-serving nonprofits. She also serves on the national boards of the American Camp Association and the American Foundation for the Blind, as well as the board of a private school that serves children as young as pre-kindergarten and as old as eight-grade. She is a past chair of the Legal Section Council for ASAE/The Center for Association Leadership. Also during 2010-12 she served on the not-for-profit advisory committee of the Financial Accounting Standards Board.
